Lawyers seem to really love podcasts. In fact, one of our most popular blog posts of all time was on the Top Ten Legal Podcasts.  Today, in light of the Legal Wellness Retreat coming up, we turn our attention to wellness podcasts. Here’s what lawyers are listening to for insight into how to live a healthy life:
“Nothing makes you more keenly aware of your health than representing injured people every day. I started listening to health and wellness podcasts when I started shedding a few extra pounds a few years ago.  Since then the number of podcasts on the topics has become overwhelming.  Some of my favorites are: The Rich Roll Podcast, The Ultimate Health Podcast, Shredded by Science Radio, and Jillian’s Podcast-Jillian Michaels. I prefer podcasts hosted by people who can laugh at themselves and don’t take themselves too seriously. These podcasts meet that criteria.” –Stephen Babcock, a personal injury lawyer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
“I have been following The Resilient Lawyer with Jeena Cho which has episodes on mental health, mindfulness, and balance as they relate to the legal practice. It has been such a useful way to spend the hour or more per day I spend in the car.” —Sarah R. Watchko, Esq., a certified elder law attorney in Georgia
“As a personal injury attorney, I experience a lot of second-hand trauma and situational negativity due to my clients’ circumstances and misfortunes. I choose to take a proactive approach to my mental well-being by listening to The Happy Lawyer Project podcast led by a talented host and a medley of guests who share practical life and career advice for younger lawyers looking for tips and strategies for creating a lifestyle they love. ” –Eric Ramos, a personal injury lawyer in San Antonio
“I listen to quite a few podcasts, but Goal Digger is one of the best. Each podcast focuses on a different topic and the nexus to apply the information to help you meet your goals. My favorite aspect of the podcast is the “Friday 5” episode. It may be “5 Ways to Improve Your Website” or “5 Ways to Increase Your Productivity”—whatever the topic, I know I will walk away with something concrete that I can do to improve my business, maintain my sanity, or reduce stress. The best thing about these “Friday 5” are that they are 10 minutes or less so I can listen to the whole podcast while I wait for my carryout.” —Rebecca Grosser, a lawyer who practices employment discrimination and criminal defense in St. Louis, Missouri
“We love our podcasts, but when it comes to wellness podcasts, there’s one in particular that we like more than any other—The Tim Ferriss Show. There’s a good reason the Tim Ferriss Show is ranked the #1 business podcast on all of iTunes. What sets the show apart is that the focus is on wellness, but with an emphasis on high performance. Tim brings in an eclectic group of world-class performers and deconstructs their lifestyles so listeners can take away insights on how to improve our mental and physical health and our work performance at the same time. We always walk away with at least one actionable insight we can utilize in our daily lives.” –Patrick and Paul Wright,  co-founders of a comprehensive law firm with branches throughout Texas
“Because attorneys are in the top three of highest suicide rates and have a very high level of depression and anxiety, it is imperative to practice health and wellness. The Mental Health Today Show and Mr. Feels: A Mental Health Podcast are two podcasts that help me stay level-minded.” —Yuriy Moshes, founding member of a firm that focuses on labor and employment matters and has offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and West Orange, New Jersey
“I am a big fan of Savage Lovecast, which is a podcast that encourages healthy relationships and acting with integrity. In many ways I consider the host, Dan Savage, a role model. He is well-educated, citing scientific research and other reliable sources of information, and he is thoughtful, empathetic, and loving when dealing with readers and listeners who turn to him for help. Dan is an advocate. He is a vocal advocate for access to health care for all (including supporting Planned Parenthood), supporting LGBT rights, and preventing suicide among LGBT youth by founding the It Gets Better Project. He is not merely a man of words but a man of action.” –Ruth Carter, owner of a firm in Arizona that focuses on numerous interconnected areas of laws aimed at serving entrepreneurs, innovators, creators, and performers
“I’ve become a huge podcast person over the past year. I love Lance Armstrong’s The Forward and The Rich Roll Podcast – both of these are hosted by very accomplished athletes who have had major ups and downs with different aspects of their lives. While much of the discussion can focus on athletics and health, the discussion can apply to virtually any aspect of one’s life—including life as an attorney. I’m surprised by how much I get out of these podcasts in terms of mindsets and how to apply these lessons on a daily basis.” –Jonathan Rosenfeld, a personal injury lawyer in Chicago

Kristin Johnson is an executive and corporate communications professional, and founder of KSJ Communications, a communications and public relations firm. She consults with a diverse roster of clients spanning the technology, professional services, financial services, public sector, consumer, and healthcare industries. In addition to Rocket Matter, Johnson writes for various other publications as well.
