Five Ways Lawyers Can Turn Around a Bad Day

    Contents

We’ve all been there. Maybe you got stuck in traffic on your way to work, one of your motions was denied, and then a client sent you a nasty email. Maybe the news about politics is getting you down. Or maybe you just woke up feeling blue for no particular reason. Whatever it is, you’re just having one of those days. Well, the good news is you can take steps to cheer yourself up.

      Here, our top five suggestions:

      Go Shopping

If you haven’t considered getting a fitness tracker, the FitBit Charge2 is really cool. It’ll track your steps (don’t forget that exercise helps boost those endorphins!) and send text/call alerts to your phone. But what’ll really help you decompress on a bad day is that you can schedule two minute breathing sessions based on your actual heart rate. Whether at your desk or in you car (in a parking lot, please!), those two minutes can really help you chill out. The device even vibrates to let you know when to inhale and exhale.

Another option that might cheer your up: Pick up a new fountain pen. Or check out this ridiculously cute robot from CES 2017.

      Let Hollywood Help

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you probably know that La La Land is the feel-good movie of the year (well, despite the whole tear-jerker ending, it really is a fun movie.) Last year was a tough year for a lot of people, and this movie couldn’t have come at a better time. So if you haven’t seen it yet, head to a theater stat. More of a homebody?  Rent Singin in the Rain or Grease….these classics have stood the test of time for a reason: They just put a smile on your face.

Musicals aren’t your thing? Watch To Kill a Mockingbird again and remind yourself how lucky you are to be a lawyer. Or just watch whatever makes you happy—Back to the Future, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Caddyshack, or Love Actually. Whatever it is, pour yourself a glass of wine or make a cup of chamomile tea tonight and escape reality for a few hours.

      Play Your Happy Mix

Create a playlist specifically for those bad days. Make sure the first song is your absolute favorite so that if you only have a few minutes to listen to the playlist, you can get a quick fix. Need some ideas? Well, apparently a Dutch neuroscientist came up with a formula that combines lyrics, tempo, and key to figure out just how feel-good a song actually is. Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now is the top mood-boosting song of the past 50 years. Here are the top ten.

Let Your Pet Cheer You Up

There’s a reason that two-thirds of all households in the U.S. have pets. They provide unconditional love and make it their life’s purpose to make you happy (um, well, maybe not all the cats do but at least they’re funny). There are lots of other benefits you’ll get from bringing your dog to work. So if you can, bring yours with you as much as possible.

If you can’t, you still have options: Devices like the interactive Petcube camera ($149) can help. “The IOS- and Android-compatible aluminum cube connects through WiFi and has a built-in audio and speaker, allowing owners to watch and communicate with their pets via a smartphone,” according to an iQ by Intel article.  “A 138-degree wide-angle camera streams HD video so owners can see exactly what Baxter is up to all day. Petcube’s sharing options also allow users to check out what kind of mischief other people’s pets are getting into, as long as their Petcubes are set to ‘public.'”

And then there’s Kittyo ($249) which lets owners watch, speak to and play with a cat remotely. You can dispense treats via a kitty carousel and even operate a laser pointer just to entertain your cat. Plus, you can record and share cat videos, using the built-in video camera and audio speaker. What’s better than that?!
