I'm a Man and I'm Not Afraid to Use Pinterest

    Contents

I love Pinterest. I’m a man, and I’m not ashamed.
I could pin all day long if ya know what I mean.
When I first heard about Pinterest I was suffering from social media fatigue. This was back in the heady introductory days of social networks, when people were running around trying out Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Digg, and Reddit like chickens with their heads cut off.
The dust had not yet settled – you had to be everywhere and everything was the next best marketing medium since TV.
So here comes another hyped-up social network that further subdivides my already pathologically scattered attention? No thank you.
Then I realized Pinterest helped me find, save, and organize visual content. I fell instantly, hopelessly, and desperately in love. I’m a visual person. I was a film major back in the day and a photographer in my former life before my software career.

      I See the Light

On Pinterest, I discovered amazing architecture: spectacular buildings I’d never known. Images from space that took my breath away. Retro posters and book covers from 50’s sci fi and world’s fairs. Enough examples of beautiful typography and design to keep me inspired for years and years across thousands of marketing clients.
Check out this awesomeness, for example:

Better yet, I could save all of this stuff and gaze at it on demand. When I see cool packaging, I take a picture of it and upload it on one of my boards. If I see something funny, I pin it to my Humor board.
All those awesome infographics you see floating around? You can find a zillion of ’em and keep your favorites all in one convenient place.

      Rude Awakening

I became a Pinterest evangelist, and asked who in the office was on Pinterest. None of the men used it, but a number of the younger women were on it. I started following their boards, and ended up getting a lot of clothing and wedding stuff jamming up my feed. For me, that was a nightmare: I still have intense PTSD flashbacks from registering at Bloomingdales when I was engaged 12 years ago.
As it turns out, 80% of Pinterest users are women. I am in a small minority.
If you haven’t checked Pinterest out before, here’s some of my favorite pins below. So men, give it a spin, and let’s try to tackle that Pinterest gender inequality issue head on. We have a long way to go, but a journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.
Connect with me on Pinterest here, and let’s share pictures of guy stuff.
