So You Want To Present: Speaking Resources for Lawyers

    Contents

Many lawyers speak with confidence in the courtroom but for business development and marketing, speaking in the conference room is also necessary. Here are a few resources to help lawyers become speakers beyond the courtroom.
Association For Continuing Legal Education – Though largely an organization for CLE professionals, lawyers and legal professionals who speak or want to speak are welcome to join. The networking opportunities which lead to speaking engagements are legend and the community of professionals are engaging and nurturing.
Toastmasters International – The granddaddy of speaker organizations, Toastmasters International teaches public speaking, communications and leadership skills through a worldwide network that includes thousands of member clubs. Check out a location near you and take a workshop.
Bar Association Speaker Bureau – Many bar associations – like Florida and Philadelphia – have speaker bureaus where lawyers volunteer to speak at organization and company meetings, civic groups, schools and professional groups. The bar associations match lawyers with organizations for requested topics. This is a great way to hone your speaker skills while giving back to the community.
Law Firm Speakers and Retreats – Started by lawyer Ross Fishman, this speakers bureau is designed exclusively for the legal profession. Check out the many resources for speakers, find a speaker for your event or get yourself listed.
National Speakers Association – NSA provides resources and education designed to advance the skills, integrity and value of its members and the speaking profession. If you’re looking for speaker, search for an expert in over 50 industries, including the legal profession. Become an expert that shows up in search results.
Lawyers can also use Twitter to get speaking gigs, contact CLE providers like Lawline, West Legal Ed Center, and PLI, join LinkedIn groups for speakers and contact conference organizers for speaking opportunities.
Finally, add a few blogs about speaking to your RSS reader or subscribe to their updates via email. Check out this list of over 100 public speaking blogs. Perhaps you can even start a blog of your own and go from small-time blogger to professional paid speaker.
