So what do most people get wrong on their websites? People get a lot of things wrong on their websites. But there’s probably two main things that they get wrong.
The first thing is that they’re not measuring their efforts. We have a mantra here that if you’re not measuring, you’re not marketing. So it’s critical that you at least have Google Analytics set up on every page on your website. When you do that then you can take a look at all sorts of different interesting things.
You can see where people are coming from, you can see what browsers they’re using, you can see their geographic locations. You can see, most importantly, what search terms they’re using to get to your website. It’s very important that you have an understanding of why people are visiting your site, when people are visiting your site and if your site is good enough for them to even stick around. Measuring is key.
Another thing that people get wrong with their websites is that they’re not directing the visitor’s attention when the person arrives at their website. People are spending all this money and pay per click advertising and SEO optimization to try and get people to their website and then once people get to their website, no one knows what to do. There’s nothing really directing the attention of the user to take a specific action.
Having very clear calls to action above the fold on your website that tells the user to get in touch with you or to download something or to contact you is really what people need. That is what makes an effective website.
