Wednesday Wisdom: Applying Ledger Adjustments – Using Debits For Non-Fee Charges

    Contents

Rocket Matter is constantly improving ways for lawyers to provide the most accurate billing statements possible to their clients. Two weeks ago, we discussed adding credits to discount or write-off a matter; now, we will show how utilizing debits will allow you to apply charges to a matter that may not fall into the cost or fee category.
A debit adjustment does not fall under the reimbursable expense or earned fee category, but is a charge to the client. One application for debit adjustments is to add a value-added tax to the client’s invoice.

After clicking “Add an Adjustment” on the matter ledger page, you may enter the amount and description for the debit. For a VAT charge, take a quick glance at the pending invoicing amount for the next invoice. Then quickly calculate the amount of the debit based on the VAT percentage. The description you provide will be visible to the client on the invoice, so they easily understand the charge.

If you are new to Rocket Matter and need to migrate a client’s past due balance to the new account, a debit adjustment will post the negative balance on the date you processed the last invoice.

Once again, be sure to utilize the “Description” field to accurately describe the charge for transparency with your client.

At Rocket Matter, it is a constant effort to assist lawyers with providing accurate bills to their clients. Legal billing can be tedious, but with these quick tips, you can make quick adjustments and get back to your passion of practicing law.
