ABA Techshow Notes – Beating the Startup Blues

    Contents

Another great session we attended at Techshow was hosted by Carolyn Elefant, from MyShingle.com, and David Masters entitled Beating the Startup Blues: A Tech Survival Guide for the New Small Office.

There were a number of great tidbits of advice during the session – the items below were of particular interest to me but are by no means comprehensive and representative of the entire session.

David and Carolyn recommended replacing your desktop with a laptop. There’s less software and only one piece of hardware to maintain. Using one system is simpler, just make sure you have proper backup and redundancy.

Carolyn recommends dual monitors as an easy way for lawyers to produce more work. A multi-monitor setup increases visible information, and offers a high return on investment, as productivity is boosted and the price for LCDs has dropped (22-inch monitors are now in the $200-$300 range). For the PC, David recommends a product called UltraMon for ease of moving windows around multiple monitors.

Regarding printers and scanners, they recommend against multi-function devices, for the reason that the individual components can break and may be inferior to standalone components. David uses an inkjet (less electricity and environmental impact) as well as a phaser printer which he loves.

Software recommendations included the free, open source NeoOffice, which will open WordPerfect documents for Mac users, and Dragon Naturally Speaking for voice recognition.
