Legal Productivity App of the Week: OverDrive Media Console for Borrowing Digital Books

Dust off your old library card and start borrowing books from the local library without leaving your house. And it’s free!

With the OverDrive Media Console app, you can now download books from the library to read on your computer, tablet and mobile devices. It’s available for both PCs and Macs, Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7.

Add a Library to OverDrive – they support digital titles from thousands of libraries and retailers. Then use your local library card to search for a title and download the book. You have one to three weeks to return it. Access to the borrowed title expires at the set due date so there is never any of the dreaded late fees.

There are so many things to love about this app, though ironically, I found myself flipping through a digital book on my iPhone during a recent visit to the gorgeous New York Public Library — the same library from which I checked out the book — from my apartment.

While we’re all about productivity, we also support our local libraries, so download the OverDrive Media Console app and enjoy the instant access to thousands of books, but don’t forget the occasional trip to your local library to check out its additional wealth of resources.
