Google’s Mobile-Friendly Update: Is Your Law Firm Website Ready?
During yesterday’s edition of our popular Current Trends in Law Firm Websites webinar series, we got a barrage of questions about mobile-friendly sites. Apparently, everyone’s aware of Google’s change to its search algorithms which now factors in a website’s “mobile-friendliness” as a ranking signal – meaning that those sites which weren’t optimized for smartphones’ smaller screens would see their ranks downgraded as a result. Google flipped the switch on their new mobile-friendly algorithm on Tuesday and will finish rolling it out by the end of the week.

The Wall Street Journal reports that 46% of Fortune 500 companies and 25% of top retailers did not have websites with “mobile-friendly” designations from Google at the beginning of April.
Kevin O’Keefe notes that law firms are in lockstep with American businesses, with Vizibility reporting that 53% of the 350 largest law firms do not have a mobile-friendly website, and as Kevin reported in February, 73% of the almost 1,000 blogs published by the Am Law 200 are not ready for mobile viewing.
What does this all mean? Simple, really. Law firms must update their websites to become mobile-friendly to compete in search as more people use mobile devices to surf and search the web. Smartphones and tablets combined accounted for 60 percent of total digital media time in May 2014, up 10 percent from the previous year. And that trend to mobile will continue. Heck, even Facebook’s shift to mobile is so thorough that its original website may soon become a footnote.
If you’re tackling your website update on your own or want to know what to ask of your web developer, Google has provided an FAQs about the April 21st mobile-friendly update.
