This week’s motivational mobile app was actually influenced by an unexpected source: Jerry Seinfeld. His mantra: “Don’t break the chain!”. To pressure himself to write more jokes (thus becoming a better comic), Seinfeld used a unique calendar system that pressured him to write every day.
He started with a calendar and a big red magic marker. For every day he wrote, he would put a big red X over that day. After a few days he would have a chain, which would grow longer and longer. His only job was to not break the chain. Jerry Seinfeld understood that small, daily improvements would compound into larger, more significant improvements.
For those of us on board with this theory (and we all should be!), there is Don’t Break The Chain!, a free and easy to use app that allows you to track your daily commitment on your iOS device. You can even create multiple chains (requires an in-app purchase) with customized colors and handy statistics.
Steve Pavlina, well known self-help author, motivational speaker and entrepreneur, also preaches the same strategy as Don’t Break The Chain! He believes in the idea of restricting the chain to 30 days to make your goal more realistic. By that time, your ability to make the habit permanent has significantly increased.
Whether you plan on building a positive habit that will last a lifetime, or simply want to test a new habit for a month, this app is a great resource for you. Daily action builds habits. Don’t Break The Chain!
