App of the Week: Calm – Chill Out, Focus, and Carry On

calm meditation app

There’s no shortage of meditation apps out there and it’s a stressful, decidedly un-meditative experience, trying to decide on just the right one. I’ve tried a few with the best of intentions, but they go unopened on my phone for long stretches and are ultimately deleted. But, Calm is different – mainly because I hang out at calm.com.

As a remote worker, I’m able to largely control noise and physical interruptions during the day. Unlike many who enjoy productivity-enhancing popular music in the background while they work, I prefer silence.

But stay at it long enough, and that silence can become deafening – which is how I discovered calm.com. I learned that it’s not the music that distracts me, it’s the type of music. If I’m tapping my toes to the beat or waxing nostalgic, it’s distracting. But when I go to calm.com, it does the opposite. The pitter patter of raindrops, the babbling brook, and other nature sounds, soothes and helps with focus. If you’re feeling particularly stressed, take a break and check out the beautiful nature scenes that accompany each track.

The free, gorgeous, mobile app, available for iOS devices includes guided meditation sessions, the 7 steps of calm, and for premium subscribers ($9.99/yr), 50 guided meditations for focus, creativity, energy, confidence, and sleep.

Not into the guided mediation thing? Keep a browser tab open on your computer with calm.com in the background, or listen to the soothing sounds on your iPhone. It’s mostly how I use the app and website, though I do occasionally check out the 2 and 5 minute “guided calm” sessions, available on both platforms. There are also 10, 15, and 20 minute guided sessions. 5 minutes does trick for me.

f you take your iPhone to bed with you (don’t we all?), put on the raindrops track and it’ll lull you to sleep.
Whether you’re on your laptop or iPhone, Calm will help you to chill out, focus, and even sleep.
